John and George Danes are twin brothers who have made a living solving problems that do not fit neatly into ordinary professions. Their latest invitation takes them to Idlewyld House, the former home of Harriet Landrigan, an enormously successful romantic novelist. Strangely, the brothers have not been told exactly what they are expected to do once they arrive.

Before they can leave, an unknown man appears. He knows about Idlewyld House, refuses to explain how he obtained that information, and makes the alarming statement that he is “the murderer.”
