Azad Bharath tells the story of Neera Arya, placing her experiences within the wider history of the Indian National Army and the Rani of Jhansi Regiment. The film is primarily a historical and patriotic drama, although its biographical foundation gives the story a more personal focus. The real Neera Arya was born in 1902 and became involved in India's independence movement. According to the Government of India's Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav archive, she joined the Rani Jhansi Regiment of the Azad Hind Fauj and became associated with intelligence work for the INA.
