The Mystery of Mr. E
John and George Danes are twin brothers who have made a living solving problems that do not fit neatly into ordinary professions. Their latest invitation takes them to Idlewyld House, the former home of Harriet Landrigan, an enormously successful romantic novelist. Strangely, the brothers have not been told exactly what they are expected to do once they arrive.
Before they can leave, an unknown man appears. He knows about Idlewyld House, refuses to explain how he obtained that information, and makes the alarming statement that he is “the murderer.”
The Mystery of Mr. E is a 2023 British murder-mystery musical directed by Martyn Tott and written by Tott with bestselling crime writer Sophie Hannah. Rather than playing its murder investigation completely straight, the film mixes the structure of a classic country house whodunit with comedy, theatrical performances and original musical numbers.
The story follows twin brothers John and George Danes, who call themselves “The Generalists” because they take on unusual assignments for unusual clients. Their newest job sends them to Idlewyld House, but before they leave, a stranger arrives at their door, somehow knows exactly where they are going, introduces himself simply as “the murderer,” and disappears. IMDb lists the movie at 1 hour 41 minutes, while Rotten Tomatoes classifies it as drama, mystery/thriller, and musical.
