Americana
Americana begins with people living on the edges of the conventional American dream. Penny Jo is a quiet waitress with aspirations that stretch beyond her current circumstances. Lefty Ledbetter is a military veteran whose own life has not developed as he once expected. Their paths become connected when a rare Lakota related artifact enters the black market.
Americana is a modern Western crime thriller written and directed by Tony Tost. The film first premiered at the SXSW Film & TV Festival on March 17, 2023, then received its U.S. theatrical release through Lionsgate on August 15, 2025.
The movie brings together a group of outsiders whose lives collide after a rare Native American artifact appears on the black market. Instead of following one traditional Western hero, Americana moves between several people who each see the artifact as a possible route to money, freedom, power, or a different life.
Sydney Sweeney leads the ensemble as Penny Jo Poplin, alongside Paul Walter Hauser, Halsey, Eric Dane, Simon Rex, and Zahn McClarnon. Lionsgate describes the film as a modern-day Western in which multiple characters clash over possession of the artifact.

Movie Story
At the center of Americana is an object that means something very different depending on who is holding it. Penny Jo sees the possibility of changing her life. Lefty becomes her unlikely partner. Other characters see money or leverage. For Ghost Eye and others connected to the artifact’s Indigenous history, the situation carries a much deeper cultural meaning.

Saturday Night
Jason Reitman structures the film almost like a countdown thriller. The audience already knows that Saturday Night Live eventually became one of television's longest running comedy institutions, but the movie creates tension by showing how uncertain its first broadcast supposedly felt in the hours immediately beforehand. Rotten Tomatoes describes the film as the true-story-inspired account of the 90 minutes leading to SNL's first broadcast.
