Gladiator II is a 2024 historical action drama directed by Ridley Scott and a sequel to his Academy Award winning 2000 film Gladiator. Rather than trying to recreate Maximus as its central hero, the sequel moves the story forward through Lucius, played by Paul Mescal.
Years after the death of Maximus, Lucius is living far from Rome when Roman forces invade his home. He is captured and forced into gladiatorial combat, bringing him back into the violent political world he once left behind.
The film combines large scale arena battles with Roman political intrigue, ambition, revenge and questions about what Rome should represent. Box Office Mojo records a 148-minute runtime, an R rating and a worldwide theatrical gross of about $462.2 million. Movie Story
Lucius has spent years away from the political centre of the Roman Empire. His life changes when Roman forces attack his home and he is taken captive. The experience leaves him angry at the empire and particularly hostile toward General Acacius, whose forces carried out the conquest.
Lucius is transported into the world of gladiatorial combat. There he attracts the attention of Macrinus, who understands that a successful gladiator can become more than entertainment. Macrinus has political ambitions of his own, and Lucius becomes increasingly valuable to those plans.
