Taking Sides
Taking Sides (2001) is a compelling historical drama directed by István Szabó, based on Ronald Harwood’s 1995 play. The film delves into the post World War II denazification process in Germany, focusing on the interrogation of Wilhelm Furtwängler the renowned conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, who faced allegations of complicity with the Nazi regime.
Set in 1946 Berlin the narrative unfolds as Major Steve Arnold (Harvey Keitel) an American investigator is tasked with scrutinizing Furtwängler’s wartime activities. Arnold’s mission is to determine whether Furtwängler’s refusal to leave Germany during the Nazi era and his performances at events attended by Nazi officials indicate support for the regime. Furtwängler (Stellan Skarsgård) maintains that his commitment was to music and that he never joined the Nazi Party, emphasizing the separation of art and politics.
The film portrays the intense and morally complex interactions between Arnold and Furtwängler, highlighting themes of guilt, loyalty and the ethical responsibilities of artists in totalitarian regimes. Supporting characters, such as Lieutenant David Wills (Moritz Bleibtreu) a German American Jew, and Emmi Straube (Birgit Minichmayr) whose father was executed for resistance activities, add depth to the narrative, reflecting the varied perspectives on Furtwängler’s actions.
